I have been sitting on this idea for over a year now. I have thought of an invention, but I don't have the foggiest idea of how to move forward, other than going on Dragon's Den. Has anyone gone down this route before?

If it’s a good idea, and I’m sure it is. Be careful who you tell.

What area is it in

@catlad Fully develop on paper with diagrams etc and the visit someone in that specific industry that would produce it. If the person you meet with has sufficient foresight, they will buy your idea from you and then either put the idea into production, or bury it for their own reasons ..either way, you benefit financially.
I did this with my idea for greatly improved aviation tyre landing safety 35yrs ago, and the production/development executive took it to the 'enth' degree before buying my product idea from me, but only to bury the idea after gaining (buying) sole production rights from me if in the future, my idea went into production. To my knowledge, aircraft are still not produced to incorporate my invention which I now believe is purely for the financial gain of the company who now own my developed idea.

Talk to a solicitor about drawing up a contract that allows you to discuss the idea with appropriate people but that stops them from copying the idea. Had a similar idea which never got off the ground, but it's still mine if I want to try again.

Also consider a patent if it is relevant, but it is very easy to get round patents.

If your invention is a product, then bear in mind that as soon as you put it on the market there will be a Chinese copy of it on sale at half the price a week later !

What was your idea?

There are specialist product development companies which you can go to with your idea, and they help you build prototypes and get patents etc.
