new kitchen ring

i intend to have a small extension for a new kitchen. I would like to fit a new ring but need a few questions answered.
Is it ok for cable runs to run horizontally?
Do cable runs behind inits need to be enclosed with conduit, trunking or chased in to wall.

Cables can run horizontally between accessories. Clipping surface behind units is fine so long as there is no risk of damage and they are properly supported.
