New Patio on top of Old?

Hello, Is it possible ( to reduce costs mainly) to lay new slabs on existing patio? Using the existing slabs as a base would mean less labour, not having to dispose of old slabs and of course not having to buy tons of mix for new base. Of course it would be inches higher but that would not be an issue as it is a square area on its own in the centre of the garden.
