New self install

Hi,

I am currently in the planning stages of remodelling an old home and electrics are next on my list. Being somebody that likes to get stuck in to things myself, and also somebody that has the luxury of the time to do it, I would like to do this work myself.

Which qualifications are needed in order to self-certify my work (full re-wiring)? and also which courses could people recommend in order to get me to a suitable standard for a domestic installation?

To self certify... registration with one of the five bodies and whatever requirements with qualifications they impose upon you, will cost you £400 a year, plus whatever it costs you to get insurance... not really intended for the one time DIY bod!

Would be far better to submit a building notice ... speak to your local building control officer and post what they say back here

OK so as long as I submit a building notice before I carry out any work and as long as the work carried out follows the current wiring regulations I can carry out a complete re-wire? The electric company will come out and do the final connection to the consumer unit post-inspection? What is the going rate for submitting a building notice and the subsequent post work inspection?

Also a small portion of the house is already wired but with wiring installed before the 2004 colour change. Will this need to be replaced or can I use them as is? seems a shame to throw away and refit perfectly good stuff.

Presumably the fees are standard? However know that council tax varies according to where you live so maybe the BC fees do too? Where I live my council has the fees listed on their website. Don't forget that it's just three fees for all the work (planning, BC approval and then BC inspection), you don't need to pay extra for just the electrics.

I don't want to offend you, but if you are asking about mixing wiring colours then maybe you have not researched enough? I recommend that you get the "Electrician's guide to the Building regulations" published by the IET. It is an excellent overview.

What Adam states is correct but it is risky. Whilst it is correct that the LABC should pay for an electrician to certify the work (although from what I hear there is a chance that you will need to argue this point), it is only that simple if you have done everything right! If you get it wrong then you'll need to put it right at your cost and pay for reinspection.
