New tap - what is this white plastic bit for ?

I can fit the rest of the tap - but not sure on the real purpose of the white part ... it fits snugly around the nut ??? But do I need it ?? (See photo)

I have the feeling this is a stupid question !!!

Usually found on sink taps to give extra support / rigidity when fitted to flexible stainless steel sinks. Fitted on the underside, next to the stainless steel.
