An elderly friend has asked me to help her to set up her new TV - it's a 38 inch Cello. She has got to the stage where a QR code appears on the screen - she has managed to follow the link on her smartphone (not bad for a 79 year old!) but this is apparently about a Google account, which she doesn't have; she has connected her wifi to the TV. There are also references to a Samsung account which have appeared on the screen apparently. I've had a look online and there's lots about creating a Google account, then deleting it when the TV is set up. Surely it must be simpler than that! Or will it work with a new Samsung account if I create one for her? She only uses Freeview and iPlayer by the way.

I have a Samsung and I dont think you necessarily need a Samsung account unless you want to download updates or add Netflix, you tube etc. Mine is a couple of years old and has never needed an update.

Even if you do its dead easy, just an email address and fill in the details once the form pops up. No need to sign in via google.

Lots of TVs need some form of account nowadays... to monitor use (and sell the data) and serve ads... and even offer streaming TV services specific to the brand or TV operating system (OS).

It will be TV OS dependent: Cello may use Android TV (aka Google TV, hence Google Account) or Tizen (by Samsung, hence Samsung account) or WebOS (by LG)... according to AI (which is as trustworthy as Arthur Daly).

One would need to look into the specific set and see if it is essential or can be deleted or...

BBC iPlayer requires an account sign in to use it as well, I believe. (As do the other PSB streamers ITVX etc.,.). A necessary evil nowadays.

do a factory reset
and do not enable internet or connect to internet
use as a dumb tv in a normal way
no features like voice or internet connected features will work
if you want i player you will need internet connection but no need to join google or samsung to use the tv other than possibly updates but these can often be done via the aeriel

OR.....

Or you can simply setup a simple gmail account to use only for the TV and thus enable all the services.
All the apps will require either a phone login (quickest) or an email account in order to use them.

If you don't want to do this then do NOT get a Hisense TV (although I'd suggest not getting Hisense either way).

It's the Tizen operating system. We set up a new Samsung account and it is now working as it should. Luckily, my friend remembered her BBC account password and so iPlayer loaded without problems. For future reference, she was prompted early on to connect to wifi and when I arrived the set was in 'internet mode' and of course a hard reset would have worked, but as she wanted iPlayer I decided to plough on.

The broadcast OTA update mechanism disappeared some considerable time ago (2019 or before).

Interweb or USB stick are the only two ways nowadays (with the latter probably fairly rarely offered by most manufacturers).

We got several authentication codes sent to her email and mobile during the setup process. She didn't have email on her phone so that caused some delay until she had fired up the laptop. So anyone doing this is advised to make sure that there is independent email access available as well as SMS code reception on a mobile. As she only uses Freeview it tuned in all the available channels as part of the setup - is it true that these are on the way out?
