Typically, the wall should be rendered in S&C before tiling.
Using a 1/2" notched trowel, and buttering the backs of the tile, you could perhaps set the tile on the bare brickwork if its reasonably flat.
Use plastic corner trims.
The wait depends upon the temperature, & the wetness of the mortar mix.
