I have a space for a freestanding cooker that I would like to replace with just a worktop. I'm happy with a current cooking appliances, don't need large oven and extra floor space is perfect for a trolley and a bin- don't need extra cupboard, but I need a worktop. Currently there is 80cm heavy duty shelf placed over the gap.
I'm going to paint worktop anyway so I do not worry about mismatch in color as it will painted in one color.
Cutting/removing/replacing existing worktop is out of the question.
How can this be done?

4 x 90-degree metal brackets, fixed to the uprights. New piece of worktop cut to size, supported by them.

(I’m not sure that painting that worktop will work well. What sort of paint are you considering?)
