Newel Post Help

Hi everyone,

Am about to install a new oak floor in my hallway (found loads of help on this forum- thanks!) I have a rather elaborate newel post which is covered in years worth of varnish (horrible pinky mahogany colour). Any suggestions on the best way to remove this bearing in mind its shape. Also what is it likely to be made of (oak I hope?) and how would I identify the wood type.

what makes you think it is made of oak?

identifying wood by the grain alone isn't easy, though oak has rather characteristic tell tale signs. is it clear or knotty?

it would not be a first choice for a newell unless completely clear and seasoned.

most wood types have a characteristic smell once cut though.

I only hoped it is oak so it would match the floor!

Untill some of the varnish is removed I cannot see any characteristics!
