Next doors condensing boiler wakes me up

I am a lowly spark living in a terrace house.

A couple of years ago my neighbour had a condensing boiler installed. But unlike all of the others in the road that have their outlet pointing out to the rear garden, his comes out in the gap between our houses. It makes a right racket at about 4 am it starts and stops repeatedly every 20s or so. Waking my baby then me.

Most manufacturers recommend not discharging directly across a boundary. A figure of 2m or so is sometimes quoted. However what you probably have is a civil not a technical dispute. Trade bodies will only care that it's installed safely. There are diverter kits available if you can persuade your neighbour.

I feel for you especially with a new baby to contend with, nappies, interrupted nights, feeds etc, remember it well. Putting up with the noise from the neighbours flue is I suspect a real pain. If it all complies with regulations, I reckon not much can be done. Your only consolation would be that the baby will in time get used to the noise and sleep right through at some stage. Thereby not waking you with the crying.

That was not meant to sound like some sort of agony aunt or be patronising, but apart from fixing window shutters/thick curtains/double glazing not a lot can be done.

NB Earlier in December, I purchased a new double glazed PVC window for a typical victorian terrace for £220, installed it my self in under a day. The noise from outside was stopped almost completely. Perhaps that is the way forward.

Thank you for the replies so far. We have double glazing, but it can be heard through the wall!

We only move into the back room to avoid the road noise, can't win can you.

Once upon a time before this recession, I could have started looking for a new house. But alas not an option at the mo.

How much are the diverter kits, any links to them, good to be armed with info before going for a chat?

Not sure on what the RGIs think, but starting/stopping every 20s or so sounds like the boiler is cycling far too frequently to me - I'm also surprised that you find it noisy enough to wake you. Perhaps it's not working properly?

It did it last year, but it did not bother me too much, as the only time I slept there was when I got kicked out the marital bed for snoring (ie when I was a bit drunk) In which case I could sleep through a tsunami, through it still roused me and I told them next door and they apologised. But did nothing about it. Now it is a real problem as the missus and the baby are light sleepers

The boiler shouldn't be firing up every 20 seconds, defo problem there i would say! They need to get a RGI in as there could be probs with combustion air becoming vitiated and shutting down, then purging itself then firing up again. a modern boiler flue discharge should'nt be loud enough to wake you up

might it firing due to a frost stat?

Or does it also happen in mild weather?

Wife says it is every 3-5 mins not 20s

It 2.3M wall to wall, with the fence in the middle.

very simple sollution works every time and will only cost you £5 all you need is a tin of expanding foam but im not telling you where to spray it

It should be 2.4m from flue to boundry line,which is the fence
