Gianluca de Ficchy, the chairman of Nissan Europe, already warned in October that the imposition of a 10% tariff on exports under WTO terms would put Nissan’s entire European business model in jeopardy.
 
The plan makes sense. As I’ve said before everyone is talking about the problem Britain will have trading with the EU. Nobody thought we might diverge and incentivise makers to be here.

I’d expect there to be a deal with US giants too. Particularly those based in Dublin.
 
The auto industry is likely to be hit with fairly radical change over the next 5 years. Many will fail. The skills and know how required to make good electric cars is completely different to current manufacturing.

However, a spokesman for Nissan Europe said that they denied such a contingency plan existed

“We’ve modelled every possible ramification of Brexit and the fact remains that our entire business both in the UK and in Europe is not sustainable in the event of WTO [World Trade Organisation] tariffs,” they said.
