Nitromors on Copper - is it safe?
Is it effective?

I'm nearing having a utility room that has mostly presentablr decor. I want to tidy up the look of the plumbin by stripping the paint back, emerying the pipework, polishing then laquering...

Yep, it's safe mate but it does take some time to work and may need a couple of applications.
It's not a bad idea to scratch through the paint as it softens with a Stanley blade or whatever, just to speed things up.
Buffing the copper up later with steel wool works quite well.
John :)

That's good to know, thanks. I had visions of some crazy chemical reaction and dying in a cloud of green gas or thinning the copper into nothing. Is it best to use laquer or varnish?

Everbrite make a range of protective coatings. They ain't cheap though, so take the time to read reviews. I haven't used any of their products.

and their UK site

It may however be quicker and cheaper to run new pipes and then seal those.

I have not used the newer formulations of paint strippers for a while. I still purchase the good old fashioned 5L tins of methylene chloride strippers (which were removed from DIY use due to carcinogens).

Now that stuff really did strip paint - if you weren't gassed in the process
Not like the nancy stuff we have to use these days!
John :)

Thanks for the link @opps, you're right - not cheap! And the site doesn't say what size is suitable for how much area. Think I'll give that a miss or it could end up very expensive. I've hit the pipe with some old nitromors that had gone a bit more viscous - still worked nicely enough. Time to get in there with the wire-wool, Autosol and laquer..

Yeah, their site is pretty crap. I note that the smallest bottle of protectaclear covers 2.5m squared

I ain't trying to push you into buying it but the following review seems to be both legit and very positive

That price is much more reasonable, I thought it was available only as a "set" with the cleaning stuff I don't need (I'll give it a shot with washing-up detergent, meths then panel wipe...) I'll bet it's nothing like 2.5m2 though

How much plumbing exists? Have you priced up the option of just replacing the pipes?
