What is this? 'Cos its news to me. The National Mileage register.

Before I went away I bought a new car, sold my old one in part exchange.

The NMR / HPI? have written to me with a form to ask for the cars mileage when I purchased it, and when I sold it, as well as any in between that I can be arsed to write down, with dates (not helped by service reciepts having 12345 typed on them for the mileage, AND the fact I gave the garage the entire service history!).

Whats this all about?! I tell the DVLA my mileage when I apply for tax (i think) so why does this 3rd party have to know too? And do I have to tell them??

You are not obliged to tell them but doing so helps to prevent mileage fiddling

But this is still voluntary then - just as it is when I renew my tax or transfer the logbook. And why get a 3rd party to do it? Government wasting money again on jobs it could do itself?

pointless anyway. i could return any of my cars to 0 miles legally tomorrow. joe public wouldnt have a clue if they were not savvy enough to check the mileages if i changed it carefully and provided little or no history.

there is an advert on this very site to change digital mileages up or down. in some ways they are easier to change than mechanical ones.
