I am trying to sort out my toshiba A100 laptop, about 6 months ago the sound stopped.
I try using u-tube

If I try a cd
It says
it cannot play as there is a problem with the sound device

I havewindows xp sp2
I tried a system restore , but it would not restore for some reason, and I want to avoid that now if possible.

I have tried the volume wheel on the front, and I have no external speakers either to try.

in the control panel, under sound and audio
It says NO AUDIO DEVICES
and the screen is greyed out
Not sure if that is relevant
I have noticed it dont bleep now either when you do things wrong

Is there an easy way a novice can diaagnose and repair
Many thanks

If you go to your control panel (classic view), system and find hardware device manager, can you see any yellow/black exclamation marks?

Thanks for the reply
no theres not any :!:
I clicked the sound devices whilst there, this brought up the same greyed out screen I mentioned above

Is it disabled in the BIOS?

Have you checked:

control panel >system > hardware > device manager > sound, video & game controllers

Is a sound card listed? Is it disabled? right click and so a "scan for hardware changes".

If you have the drivers, try an unistall, scan for hardware changes and re-install the drivers.

Is it an on-board soundcard or does it also have a 3rd party sound card built-in?

If it's any consolation my sound hasn't worked in 2 years on my laptop -grrr...
