Noises from the loft.

When I have either flushed the toilet or run the cold taps for a short time I get a strange noise from the loft. It sounds similar to the noise you would get if you blew acroos the top of a bottle with water in it. My house is only four months old. Any ideas?

seems unlikely but maybe a noisy air admittance valve on the top of a stack.

is there a large black plastic cold water cistern in the loft, and/or do you have a copper cylinder and a pumped power shower ?,

the cold supplies might be indirect and the ball valve might be partially blocked.

Was a typing error he meant water hammer
caused by High water pressure, sharp bends, loose pipework, undersized or restricted pipework but more often than not as Kev suggests a dodgy balltap. The pipe or any part of the rising main components resonate at various frequencies; resulting in a variation of noises from what sounds like someone banging a drum, to a high pitched whistle; and probably beyond the range of human hearing. This usually goes on till the water flow stops or reduces below a certain level ie. when the tank that you drew water from is full or nearly full.

As you say its a new house so there should be an isolation valve just before the tank in question. Its a ¼ turn with a screwdriver thing. Try altering the position of that so that the noise doesnt happen but make sure you dont turn it off though! If the slot is across the line of the pipe its off!

After that the air admittance thing is a possibilty and after that see if you can get it on Most Haunted!!!
