Hi All,

New to the forum so will try my best to explain, moved into my first place a year or so ago and I have a potterton profile 50e boiler which has worked fine it has a DAB pump attached to the system. All the rad's are hot and work fine all balanced ok.

Since the heating went on it has making a loud noise from the pump when the heating is on. I have looked around the board and guessed their is air in the system. I have unscrewed the nut (when the system was off) to release air however I was not sure how far to unscrew it and a dribble of dark ish water came out no air.

I have yet to bleed the radiators around the house which could also be the problem picking up a key tommorrow. I know it may take a couple of tries to get all the air out.

I am after some advice on the pump as there is three settings which I have guessed is a speed setting it is currently on 2 if i switch it to 3 it sounds like it is about to take off, if I put it on 1 the noise is lower and seeing as the airing cupboard is right next to the bedroom in the mornings it would be handy if I could leave it on this but I am not sure if this is ok to do so as I would imagine it has been put on 2 for a reason.

Any help/suggestions on the problem would be much appreciated to stop the grief from the Mrs...

will be ok on 1 for now.
is it not making a noise when the hw is on heating off ?
usallyif the pump is on it's last legs or air in the pump it will be noisey on hw and heating.

It seems to be louder and more consistant when the heating is on however it does sound like their is air in there when the heating is off and hot water is on aswell.

try sticking it on 3 for 10 mins should get the air out.
or shut the system down and remove the centre nut and see if any air releases.
or poss could be bearing in pump starting to go.

Ok I will give that a try can I unscrew the whole nut and remove it, wont water come pouring out?

Yes they can pour pretty well, have a big bowl ready. But I doubt air is trapped.
Air going round the system sounds like gravel or small stones.

If it's the pump rattling, you'd hear it with a "listening stick". Something like a piece of wood or metal with one end on the pump and your ear to the other.

DAB pumps are about the cheapest, and they do wear out quickly if there's any dirt in the system.

Right many thanks for the help up to now. I have an update, I have blead all the radiators and as I suspected there was no air in them as they are all hot at both the top and bottom.

I have once again bled the pump and it has made a little difference but once again there was no air however the water was clearer than before.
I did not take the screw out completly would I be able to see if anything is in the pump with it out should I try this?

Many thanks,

Lee

I have now put the pump on speed setting 3 and it no longer makes hardly any noise. Is this ok to leave it on this or will this knacker out the pump I have 7 rads 2 bed house.
