Thanks for everyone's input on this. I think the technologist is approaching it from a belt and braces cover all eventualities angle which is kind of understandable.
I suppose I have the advantage of knowing the depth of the neighbouring foundations which, I imagine, could be quite difficult to ascertain for a lot of other applicants in a similar situation. I only know this because I went and asked the neighbour.
The technologist seems a good sort and I'll have another chat with him about it.
