Not got a clue

Hope some of you can help here.

Moved into a new house in July, obviously was warm and no requirement for heating. Since mid Sept my better half being chilly has had the heating on.

On a few occasions we have had the situation where the radiators downstairs were cold but the ones upstairs warmish. Boiler made a bit of a clanking sound.

So the pump was replaced.

6 days later, pump still working but radiators downstairs again cold. Central heating guy came out again and put some sludge removal X400 ( ??? ) stuff into one of the radiators and would be back in about 4 weeks to put in an inhibitor.

Checked the downstairs radiators this morning and again they seem to be getting a bit chilly. This cycle seems to repeat itself about every 6 days.

Any ideas as to what might be going on here ????

Boiler is about 12 years old, installed when the house was new. No room thermostat just those valves on each radiator with numbers indicators on the side going from Blue ( cold ) to Red ( hot ).

Any help greatly appreciated before my better half freezes and insists we replace the whole system

[EDIT] its not a combi boiler but as to what make it might be I couldn't say, it has one rocker switch on the lower right hand side.. the vales are ( from top to bottom ) HIGH - OFF - LOW

what boiler have you got

You mention a pump being replaced and a chemical desludger being used.

This makes me think that your system may have a lot of sludge in it (this clogs the pump and also the pipes).

How long ago was the chemical cleaner put in? Has it been flushed since?

Do you get gas in the radiators when you bleed them?

What colour is the water in the radiators?

Does the pump seem unusually hot?

Does the hot water cylinder get hot?

If you can't see a maker's name anywhere on the boiler, see if you can post a pic - someone might recognise it.

A picture of the airing cupboard pipework (there may be a pump and electric valve) may also give some clues.


BTW you really ought to have a room thermostat. Ask you CH guy about fitting one.
