I fitted a new consumer unit today, and connected the shower to the rcd. However it trips after being on for about 5seconds.Any info on the cause would be greatly appreciated

Faulty shower.

N to E fault elsewhere on RCD side of CU, showers high load finding a secondary route and therefore causing an imbalance.

All will be revealed when you use an insulation resistance tester (which you should have used before energising the circuits).

Is it really an RCD which trips, or is it actually an MCB?

What size is the shower?

What size is the RCD and MCB which supply it?

What were the IR test results for the circuit?

Are you competant to have carried out this work considering the simple nature of the question you have asked?

Well considering i very rarely do any domestic work i don't often come across many problems. The vote of confidence is greatly appreciated thanks

Almost certainly a faulty shower - take off the cover, maybe there's a small leak visible.

Any electrical fault in the circuit, or hard electrical fault in the shower electrics, would trip the RCD immediately, (unless it's a 5000ms-delay type one.... :) )

Just to clarify- the RCD trips 5 seconds - but after switching on :

A] the shower MCB?

B] the isolating switch for the shower circuit?

or

C] The shower unit itself?
