Oast house, problem calculating

If I were doing the job I'd ignore the maths and think:

What is the largest square I can make out of the lengths of flooring that I have? What is the largest shape I can fit in without making any cuts?

Then I'd calculate the extra pieces I'd need to finish the job.

Because of this I'd work out two things, first the actual surface area which has already been noted as 18.1 square metres. Then the square surface area, as Johnny_t has also mentioned, that this circle will completely fit into, being 4.8 x 4.8 = 23.04 square metres.

Personally, I'd at least account for 21 square metres to account for patterns and unusable wastage. Better to have more than less, unless no problem to get more in middle of the work.

In the end I ended up for 23 sq m for the round area (customer also wants two normal rooms done). Nice 'little' job if it turns into something, hubby is looking forward to it and expects it to take a bit longer than normal (with lots of bits for our wood burner ) Funny enough, we did talk about Oast houses just this week, before this customer walked in. So warning: be careful of what you discuss, you might end up with it
