Since virtually no mobile phone signal, any smart meter will likely fail to work in smart mode.

So you will not get the benefits, and it will need a meter reader to visit, with an outside meter box, we did not even know when it was read, he just did it. However in this house, the meter is in the flat, under main house, at the moment no one lives there, but clearly if it was used, meter reader would have a problem. So it was necessary for us to read the meter, and I simply have never worked out the sequence of button pressing required to get the readings required, so I simply can't read the smart meter. So if the app fails, then not a clue what it is recording.

They would probably have the same problem (with 'very poor mobile phone signal') in my house - which is why I've always told my supplier that if, despite that, they ever install a 'smart' meter in my house, I will thereafter flatly refuse to provide them with any meter readings

However, I gather that there are various ways in which, if they so wish, they can address the 'problematic comms' issue in ways which do not require direct access to the mobile phone network.

Yes, I would not provide them will readings either. The smart meter up north and down south is not the same.

We have a north/south divide, I assume Isle of Wight is south so used mobile phone masts? But it is all too easy to forget there are two systems, it seems in the north they could revert to a phone but south can't use a mast.

Around where I live here in Wales there are many who can't get a working smart meter.
