Odd tiling technique?

watched a plumber (whose work I regard as very good) tiling for a neighbour and I noted that his technique for the adhesive was to place 6 large dollops on the back of a 300x600 wall tile, and then fit it to the wall

Most of the tiling how to guides I've seen advocate pasting the wall, and for larger tiles back buttering the tile too.. Is this a regular method of tiling for walls? He uses a notch trowel and spreads the floor when doing floor tiles; the dabs are just for walls

If I caught him doing that then I would give him the boot with no pay and an invoice for the tiles he wasted. Don't replicate the method you saw mate.

Wall tiling should be the same principle as a floor. Powder, full coverage and bb for larger tiles.
