Oil and Hardwax compatibility?

Heya,

After much research, I've found someone that suggested a fat layer of oil first and then a thin layer of hardwax on top to get the best of both world. I'm planning to use Bona Carl's products. Is there any reason why this should not be a good plan?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi
To answer your exact question. Yes they are compatible when applied correctly.
Is it a good idea? probably no unless you are talking about a coloured oil, then a clear hardwax over the top.
Clear oil and hardwax oil will give roughly the same wood colouration so why bother trying to mix two different products and end up with some left in both tins.

These penetrating oils like oil 45 and 90 (not hardwax) are designed to disappear into the wood and leave nothing on top. If you apply too much it will just sit on the surface and look a mess.

For simplicity just apply 2 coats of the hardwax oil.

Thanks, much appreciate your message. The thing is, I'm gonna be doing 40m2 (which by the time you do two coats is actually 80m2). I'm going with Bona products as they're the ones retailed by the company that's delivering the sanders. And their products come in 2.5 litres for hardwax which is not enough for two coats, or in 5 litres of oil which covers 65/70m2. Whatever i do, i'll need more than one bucket of product.

As oil colours pine slightly (only saying that because that's what i read everywhere), and hardwax is more water repelant (ditto), I figured a combination of the two would make sense to avoid my corridor being damaged by people with not-so-dry shoes and people coming out of the bathroom. Unless I can be convinced of a better b-plan :).

or a 2.5litre and a couple of 0.75 litre and you will be right there.

That said I would buy the 5 litre of one product and keep what's left in reserve for a thin overcoat in a year or three.

Unless you go for a coloured oil

the colour the Oil 90 and Hardwax oil will give are almost the same. Thus save time and money and just buy the hardwax oil.
