Old films of British life...

Foreign-narrated film from 1968 of the Portobello Road area of London, full of antique shops and stalls. See the market traders with their spiel, and the colourful characters of Olde London. The long-haired busker at the beginning of the film is Dave Brock, shortly before he formed his group, the mighty HAWKWIND...

Do the menfolk share the same tooth?

I'm confident it changed beyond recognition in the 40 years before that, and the 40 years before that, ad infinitum.

For the better or worse is pure subjective. And usually narrow minded people will see it for the worst.
Sometimes it really is for the worst.

I'll think you will find going back 80 years rather than 40 years it certainly would not have been better because we would have been in the throes of World War 2 and life would not have been better, especially for "Working Class" families and the "fighting age" men would have been Conscripted to fight in the War and many of the women would have been expected to take jobs that would have been considered "men's work" and in the Larger Cities like London, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow the women like my mother in Glasgow were also expected to be "Fire Watchers" at night positioned in the tallest building that gave the best views over specific areas where they were expected to radio in the Streets and Buildings worst affected by the Bombing and usually they were Locked Out onto the roof of the building so that they wouldn't desert their posts. Along with all that also came food and clothing rationing, so definitely Not a Better Time. So Better or Worse is not Subjective it is Reality and those that saw that as worse were certainly Not Narrow Minded. And if you went back a further 40 years to 1906 in the Reign of Edward VII, I doubt very much that would have been considered a better time for Working Class Families with it being only five years after the end of the Victorian Era, while the Country was Wealthy And was Considered a Global Superpower, a Third of Britain's Population lived in grinding Poverty !! It was a Time when Incomes for Ordinary Working Men were Still Very Low and they would have struggled to Pay Rent Never Mind Buy a Property, in most cases home would have been a small back to back Terrace house or a Flat in a Tenement Building and often overcrowded, with no in-door plumbing and a Shared Outside Toilet and hot Water was only available from a kettle, and they would have been working a minimum of 6 days a week. The Work House was still a grim possibility if you were unfortunate enough to be Ill for an extended period because the was no State Sick Pay, the Modern Welfare State was still several years away. So believe that are being a Better Time would have Required Extremely Rose Tinted Glasses and in Absolutely No Way Would You have Been Narrow Minded for think it was Worse Back Then. . "I'm confident it changed beyond recognition in the 40 years before that, and the 40 years before that, ad infinitum.

So "For the better or worse is pure subjective. And usually narrow minded people will see it for the worst." Is Complete Nonsense because better or worse in the case of each of those Eras is a Case of Reality......... Reality that Britain was Better back 40years ago, Reality that it was Worse 80 Years ago and Reality that it was Even Worse back 120 years ago.

Noseall
Britain has changed beyond recognition in the last 40 years and it is for the worse.
Nonsense.

You absolutely need to insert "F" between Nose and All, What it particular do you believe hasn't changed since 1986 and indeed changed for the Worse!
Even though it was the year after Thatcher had Demolished the Miner's Strike and Closed down British Coal Mining, meaning we Imported Coal instead of Mining it !! and it signified the End For Heavy Industrial Labour such as in the Steel Mills and Heavy Duty Machinery. The Trade Unions had been severely weakened and the North South Divide Had Expanded Considerably with High Unemployment in the North. I was one of those in the South and the Divide made for even better conditions and Life Styles in the South, Britain had Joined what was then the Common Market in 1973 and there was a first ever National Referendum to decide whether the UK should remain in the Common Market, a resounding "Yes" at the time. By 1986 UK immigration was Defined by tighter Controls on Commonwealth Nations and New Visa Requirements. Strict Legal Categories from the British Nationality Act of 1981 were Fully in Effect, Separating British Citizenship from Unconditional Rights of Abode for Many Overseas Colonial Subjects. Around 17,600 Nationals from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan were Accepted for Settlement in the 12 Month Period Ending in March 1986 and Total Annual Settlement Numbers in the 1980's Averaged around 54,000 per Year........................................ As Against the Single Year ending December 2025, there was a total of 503,633 Grants of Indefinite Leave (settlement) issued in the UK, according to the Home Office Immigration Statistics (A slight Decrease from 2024).
And you try to give us the Bullshit about no Changes and no need to worry about Immigration, you really have your head up your arse.

Blackburn wakes week,1957, another wonderful old film from the when the BBC was British.

Blackburn is one if the starkest examples of the population replacement scheme. Civilised, orderly, happy and peaceful in 1957; stinking, dangerous, hollowed-out third-world hellhole today

You mean English.

Maybe you'd like to explain this 'population replacement scheme' - it sounds terribly important.

Are they planning to open clandestine bakeries across the country in secret locations?

Carefree and exciting times, as epitomised by this meme. :ROFLMAO:View attachment 412045
Here is an example for the reason for that change:

Car centric thinking has made our cities far less accessible to our kids.

I never went near a city when I was a kid.

Scrumping from gardens and orchards, swimming in local water courses, tree climbing, fishing and football, knock and run.........
All criminal offences now, or damaging to health

Don't think it's UK, but this film of motor racing presumably in the 20s is compelling viewing. Very brave men before H&S. Shows how much progress we've made in car safety. Guessing that some in the film didn't walk away.

Many of the places I used to do such things no longer exit. Many tree climbing areas and open fields have either been built on or turned into arable fields.

I used to bike miles as a kids, but my kids can't, owing to the shear volume of traffic. Highwayman said he was working on a new junction near Beverley. I used to bike to a disused quarry not far from there (in the 80s), and the traffic was a fraction of what it is now, due largely to urban sprawl (and out of town retail parks).

You might find this interesting, how suburbia is a terrible place to bring up kids if you have alternatives:

No Not Bakeries; Butchers all Halal. You know full well what he means, unless you live in a town/city like that or even large housing estates within a town that has changed beyond recognition and the town now resembles Islamabad on a market day you won't realise just how bad it has become. People decry Tommy Robinson and I certainly wouldn't count myself as one of his admirers, but being that much older than him and having grown up in the town that he used to live in it is no wonder his rhetoric is what it is, White British are now the Official Minority in the Town. There are 2 White Female Labour MPs for the Town........ "Rachel Hopkins and Sarah Owen have strongly and consistently supported pro-Palestinian causes, As the Labour MPs representing Luton—a town with a large and politically active Muslim population—both politicians have aligned themselves closely with groups like Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East (LFPME) Sarah Owen serves as a Co-Chair of LFME." It's a Case of anything goes to garner the Muslim Vote !

Knock and Run or Knock Up Ginger as we used to call it and Scumping were damaging to your health......... if you got caught, it was a clip round the ear or a boot up the backside !
