Not sure how old the fixed wiring is in my house but my lighting circuits and ring mains are not wired with an earth. It's just the old neutral and live in red and black. Is a rewire recommended to bring up to standard?

Cheers

Yes. the wiring is VERY old. Do not use it. No earth on lighting is only just acceptable, but on sockets is very dangerous. Get in a spark ASAP, you need a full rewire.

If the sockets have no earth then it definatly needs sorting out urgently, but this would be very unusual for a socket circuit regardless of age.

If the lights have no earth then the wiring could date from anywhere upto the mid 70s

This may or may not need sorting urgently depending on the style of wiring. However it is probably a good idea to have this replaced at the same time.

The best thing to do would be to get a local electrician to have a look and advise you how good / bad condition the wiring is in.

Do you have a digital camera?
If so take a photo of your consumer unit, a light switch and plug socket, and post them on this site.

We should be able to give you a rough age from this.
