I've removed some radiator valves in order to replace with TRVs, and on all of them the olives were stuck fast, and I had to use a junior hack saw to weaken and then pry them off.

The pipe underneath where the olives were is slightly dented all around however - as if it had been tightened so much it crushed the pipe. I suspect that I should cut the pipe off below this before putting the new valves, but this will mean the hassle of lowering the radiator. Is there any alternative?

You should have been able to replace the TRVs straight onto the fittings without needing to do all that. I certainly did when I fitted my TRVs.

You might get away with fitting new valves and olives and using lots of PTFE tape. If not, I'd be tempted to get a mini pipe cutter and remove the compressed bits of pipe and either try pulling some pipe up into place or use a straight coupler and add a couple of inches of fresh pipe, if space permits.

PTFE tape on the olive, overlapping onto the copper pipe, makes a very good seal. You have to make sure the olive is fully seated in the right place before you tape it.
