We've just painted our dining room and have got one difficult wall where the paint refuses to stick in one corner! It's an old cottage and I think the wall is cob. It has some sort of render on it. Initially the paint went on OK, but on the second coat the first coat all peeled off and was all flaky. As we were scraping off all the flaky paint there was a white powder coming off as well so we took most of that off and it was back to what looks like concrete.

We have tried to paint it again but the same thing happened. We have also tried using plasters PVA (even using it neat on one occasion) but it still didnt work!

Does anyone have any idea what we can do or what paint we need? We have considered plasterboarding it, but as its an original "bumpy" wall it's a bit of a feature and we like it.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Wonder if it's Bare stone? Think you will always get a problem with it flaking off, abit like painting london common bricks, it all fries up and flakes off.
Try a coat of sandtex masonsry paint smooth.
Orselect some primer from here ? http://www.zinsser.com/subcat.asp?CategoryID=1

Good luck.

OK thanks. Think we might try one of those primers. Sounds like it will do the job.
