Hi all, I have two open fires which are used in the Winter.

Both leak gasses into the above bedrooms (which have open and unused fireplaces). I am having cowls fitted to the tops of all pots and liners put down the working flues to ensure all gases are safely extracted to the atmosphere.

My question is around the register plate. Am I safe installing one slightly up the open fireplace flue? I want to make sure none of the gasses from the fire make it into the open flue. There is a very good draw on these fires, so I'm hoping the smoke doesn't end up building around the register plate.

I know stoves are more efficient, but the fireplace inserts are original 1906 ones with plates for warming kettles/saucepans. I don't want to be the one removing these, and the heat I get from the fires is good.

Flue liner for open fire, if so what size??flue area should be a percentage of fire opening
I had a long thought about all of this and decided to remove the fireplaces and replace with burners (which I'd used for a number of years before moving here). The fireplaces I took out were not original and the hearth tiles long since taken up, so no loss of history.
