Open fire

We have an open fire in both rooms but when one is lit, smoke comes down the chimney in the other room. I have even put a chimney balloon in the room we don't use but the smoke still finds a way. If I open the window in the room where the fire is lit it helps clear it a bit but it's still a problem. It's quite strong smell.

Would fitting something on one of the chimneys help?

sounds like the mid feathers could be breaking away. the only real cure would be to fit liners of the correct type in the flues

just remember that even coal fires can kill from carbon monoxide poisoning.
