We recently removed a stone built fireplace from our 30's bungalow, revealing what looks like the original fireplace opening.
We have uncovered a large stone lintel and can quite clearly see the brickwork that was added when the fireplace was bricked up to create the smaller opening.
We are wanting to open it back up with the potential of fitting a log burner.
My question is, is it safe to now remove the bricks that were added below the lintel as i'm pretty sure its not structural and were added just to create the later fireplace.
