Our political system, what 'is' the answer?

By the way putting 'words' in inverted commas or quotes as in the thread title is not some sort of bold-equivalent emphasis as many seem to mistakenly think these days! It's a quotation, and/or means that it's not really that thing. Would you prefer to eat a Beef Burger or a 'Beef' Burger?

In rejoining this debate, I want to say that if nothing else, opinions on here may reflect how the whole country feels: many different opinions of which way to go. I suspect, though, that the general agreement is that Labour is not the way to go!
Having seen many news reports, I would have expected Reform UK to take the next general election but, having read this site, anything could happen. I do feel that in the country generally there is much disagreement and perhaps lack of trust in any political party.
It will be another three years before we have the chance to vote in our next government. My feeling now, quite apart from my own preference, is that who knows what will happen in 2029!

We have a media owned by billionaires without consequences. They make profit from causing outrage and discord, far more in the last 10 years than at any time. If we don't tackle this, things won't improve, as they will continue to sew fear and division into society for their benefit.

Brexit is just one example.

They need to be held accountable for their actions. Accuracy needs to be a requirement not just an option.

You should check out the Dsily Fails use of them, particularly in headlines. They manage to quote, create emphasis and scare at the same time, with occasional irony. But all in the service of sensationalising, exaggerating, misleading or plain lying.

I can sum it up for CHATman in one word: TRUST.

Much of the mistrust is a symptom of the Western malaise I was discussing.

People in the West are very unhappy. But they don't really know why. They want politicians to make them feel better. But these are not problems which politicians can actually fix. So, society starts mistrusting politicians because they can't solve society's existential angst.

That all sounds like a justification for communism.

What's your alternative to billionaire ownership? State-control? You mean like the BBC, with all its dodgy reporting and many issues over the years.

If you remove all independent journalism then you end up with China, Russia or North Korea. Although I suspect the likes of Starmer and Hypno-tits Polanski (or whatever his stage name is) actually want this to happen.

They could start by at least trying to fix the issues that worry the population, instead of promising to at election then doing the exact opposite.

I don't recall Labour's manifesto saying that they'd do absolutely nothing to stop the boats, then build more council houses specifically reserved for foreigners only.

It might not help as much as you think. I have a strong feeling that stopping the boats won't actually make people any happier. They will just move onto demanding another issue be solved.

If you Google something along the lines of 'if all Muslims left the UK would we still have an existential vacuum' then you will get some idea of the arguments for and against the proposition.

You are such a wet lettuce. Why don't you just state plainly what you want, which is unlimited immigration from muslim countries at the expense of the British taxpayer. Notch said it, Himmy says it, Noseall Warey and Blup all say it.. so be proud of your beliefs and VOTE LABOUR FOREVER!

Holding billionaires accountable is so far from state owned media, that I hardly know where to start.

Your post is a Strawman Argument.

In fact your post demonstrates how people have become extreme in their views of our politicians. Starmer is in no way wanting to do that.

Do you really think that the intelligent majority who can see the massive consequences of open border nonsense are just misbehaving kids who are having a tantrum?

Utterly patronising nonsense.

Go on then, tell us how you have an independent media that's not owned by billionaires...

Authoritarian communism is where you end up when you start meddling with who can say what. There really isn't a middle ground.

You just accept that media will have a bias, put your brain in gear when reading stuff and don't assume that everyone else is less intelligent than you and just blindly laps everything up.

They will find a way in by lorry or sea containers. But even assuming there was a complete end to illegal migration, Trumpf’s IC E thugs have shown what will happen next.

Hopefully.

I agree by the way, the boats were probably the result of us leaving the EU so checks on trucks were increased. The people now in boats were previously getting in via trucks. So the switch to boats just made an existing problem more visible.

Whatever the means, it has to stop. For the sake of the resident population and those taking massive risks doing it, motivated by the pot of gold we're openly offering them.
