Hi at the moment have my outside wired into a plug socket but would like to put it straight into the main fuse board.

Can I use the same wire and what size fuse would I need.

Thanks

You're better off wiring it into a local lighting circuit. You need to know the size of the cable, the power and voltage of the light, the load on your lighting circuit, acceptable methods of routing cable, earthing requirements, testing requirements, building regs and electrical requirements. If you want to wire direct into the fuse box, then you need to know what you're doing!

Well, you've missed off some essential information:

What is the power of your outside light?
What size wire is connected to it?

Wiring direct to the fuseboard constitues a new circuit and that is notifiable work.

Edit: darn it SS, me too slow!

Seeing as it is allready plugged into a socket, why not add a Fused Connection Unit (fused spur) next to the existing socket, you'd still need to provide switching even if it was fed direct from your cu anyway, which is a tad excessive for one light anyway.

Put a 3A fuse in your FCU (the same as should be in your current plug!)

I suggest it's a DP Switched FCU, with a Neon Indicator in it for convenience, I seem to recall that the Regulations used to state that for outside lights, a DP switched FCU with Neon shall be provided in a suitable indoor location - but not sure when it was abolished. (No doubt the average homeowner would have visited his local Woolworths to buy said FCU and outside light fitment!)
