Hi, I am fitting a 240V light in my garden, a post type.

My plan is to run swa cable underground from the light to a switched fuse spur inside my house off my downstairs ring main. The ring main is protected by 30mA RCD at CU. Do I need an extra RCD protection at the spur or is it ok because the ring main is already protected.

Thanks.

You can do it like that, but anytime you have a residual current problem with the outside light, it will trip all other equipment on the RCD protecting that and other circuits.
When dealing with outside electrical equipment it's best to go straight to the CU and protect it separate from the inside stuff, i.e on an rcbo.
Again this is a special location and must be notified to building controls.

Would doing job like this still be notifiable???

Thanks

If I notify the council how much is this small job likely to cost me?

What does it involve?

Would it need to be tested and who would do it?

Thanks

Costs vary massively, you will need to find your local building control department and ask them.
You can search here:
http://www.labc.uk.com/site/index.php
(right side of page, 'find your local authority').

To notify you send them a building notice (basically your name, address, where the work is being carried out and a description of what is being done) and whatever the notification fee is.

They should then inspect / test it as required and provide a completion certificate when it is finished.
