I have just moved house and there is an outside weatherproof socket. When I plug in my socket tester it shows an earth fault. The socket comes from my shed so I checked the supply in there which also shows an earth fault. This, in turn , is supplied from a main board in my garage and has it's own breaker. All the sockets in the garage are Ok.Any thoughts as to what the problem may be and what I do about it?
|Thanks for any help.

Dodgy DIY electrics? I think the fault is obvious - an earth wire is disconnected somewhere.

How's about the earth for the cable extending to the shed not being terminated at the garage CU.

What type of cable is run between the garage CU and the shed?

As you mentioned that the earth is present on the sockets in garage, it can only be an issue on the cable servicing the shed from the garage.

something badly connected; or a damaged cable. Check all the connections first.

There is also a very slim chance that it was professionally installed with an earth spike in the outbuilding instead of an exported earth; but this is very unusual, and you should see a heavy earth cable running to a hatch in the ground.
