Hi all, I am trying to fit a new ceiling light....last minute I know! I wasn't expecting all those wires though, can anyone help me figure what goes where please. The only loose wires are two blue (one with a red sleeve) and a brown, and the green earth ones (see pic). The light fitting has three wires, all clear, but labelled S, N and Earth. Help!

Are there are two switches controlling this light ?

If yes then the most likely arrangement is that the two blues are switched live and should therefore bothh be connected to the S terminal. Black is the Neutral and should be connected to the N terminal. All the green wires connect to the E terminal

No just one switch. Two cables have a red, yellow, blue and green wire coming out, and one has a green, red and brown!

Im thinking the black and blue should go together? They look like they were twisted together at some point.

That would make blue sleeved red the live for this lamp, the yellow the switched for the other lamp and the blue the neutral to the other lamp. Black and red would be incomming neutral and live.

Obviously only an educated guess...

Randomly connecting cores together assuming what they might be isn't actually a sensible option at all however.

Even if by pure chance it worked this time.

And it would have been good to properly identify cores before reconnecting them as required by BS7671.
