As the title really! It's be cheaper to run t&e internally, then junction where it leaves house before swa to garage.... Is this good practice, or should I stump up and run the swa right back to CU?

Thanks

It depends and is up to you.

Overhead doesn't have to be SWA -

but if the run in the house is where 'ordinary' cable would require an RCD then you might prefer to use SWA and not have an RCD in the house for garage installation.
