Thanks briwire.Do i need any specific certificate for Pa testing.Other than being competent and the for mentioned. Had a chuckle about the dentistry jokes though. But my chasing walls and lifting floorboards days are over.

many companies contract the work out so that their electricians aren't tied up for a week or two. We normally get charged about £1-80 per appliance.

Theres definately a market out there, good luck.

I looked into this when we started doing our own PA Testing. As far as I can ascertain the only requirements are to be competent to perform the tests and to interpret the results. There are courses that you can go on if you want a piece of paper. When we bought our tester, it came with a training DVD and free on-line test which if passed gives you a nice certificate of technical competence in the theoretical aspects of In-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, endorsed by NAPIT (The National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers)

I found a lot of useful information at http://www.pat-testing.info/index.htm

Also worth getting hold of IEE Code of Practice for In- Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical equipment. It was updated in 2007 and is now on the 3rd edition. Only place I found specifying the 3rd edition was http://www.pat-services.co.uk/iee-code-of-practice-92.htm
