Ive always had the same number and changed networks once, it was all done in the shop.

I have 2 phones with O2, ones my lads. When I went to swap his old number to his new contract, O2 managed to turn my phone off!! I went to the local shop and it took over a day to sort out. I ended up with his old number transferred to mine

O2 even admitted the operator knew which number to swap.

You must be thinking of BT Cellnet and Racal-Vodafone, both of whom were installing infrastructure in 1984, but didn't have networks available to the public until very early 1985.

In fact, Ernie Wise made the first televised mobile call on 1 January in London to Voda headquarters in Newbury.

I remember seeing it on TV. When I say mobile call, it must have been a heavy beast!

Yes, now you mention it, it was ‘86, the year my son was born. Originally with Vodafone changed to Cellnet. I paid £1,475 for a phone the size of a gallon of petrol! £50 connection charge, £25 monthly standing charge, no free minutes, 50p per minute or part minute and texts hadn’t even been thought of.
