Rubbing down my facias before repainting and where the old paint flakes off reveals this yellowing of the wood that seems to be soaked into the wood itself.

Anyone know if this is some kind of treatment or preservative?

Does not appear to be a "preservative??"

To find out if it was an applied paint finish use a scraper / chisel / even a screwdriver to try to scrape off the material, that may?? give a clue ar to what it is??

Ken.

It's just how the untreated wood has weathered, I should think.

May need a bit of careful covering, if you are staining/varnishing.
