Painting architrave

Hi

Am painting wooden architrave around doors in porch cupboard. I’ll use masking tape, but any general pearls of wisdom would be appreciated. (You’ll see that surround on the left side butts up against the wall)

First things first, you need to sand the existing woodwork. If you are not bothered by existing lumps'n'bumps then 180 grit paper should be sufficient to provide a "key". If you want a better quality of finish then I would recommend that you start with a rougher grade of paper (such as 80 grit). Don't forget to remove any dust after.

if you want to eliminate the hairline cracks where the architrave mets the walls you will need to use caulk (and a caulking gun). Once you do that though, the caulk will very slightly encroach on the plasterwork. That means that your gloss/eggshell will slightly encroach on to the plaster as well and you may need to touch in the emulsion- that said- in image number one, it looks as though the previous paint has already run on to the walls.

Apropos pearls of wisdom... take the doors off. It will make life easier. They look pretty light and each only seems to have 2 hinges (meaning only 3 screws per hinge). Undo the screws on the frame side rather than the door side. They should be recessed which means the door wont instantly fall to the ground but it would be prudent to put some wedges (of some description) under the edge of the door whilst removing them.

Advantages of removing the doors- less risk of getting paint on them, additionally it eliminates the risk of the gap between the frame and doors becoming "clogged" with paint.

With regards to painting, it is difficult to comment without knowing if you plan to use waterbased or oil based paints

Thought you’d spot that. Yes, will remove that before commencing task.

Doors-there’s actually three hinges per door, with two screws in each hinge. Noted re removing from frame side. (Hinges aren’t recessed, unfortunately)

Paint- was going to use gloss.
