Painting over a two-tone wall?

The previous house owners have painted the spare room a strange two tone colour. The top half is magnolia, and the bottom half is bright green!

We want to paint the room one colour, a light purple, so how would we go about doing this so that it dries the same colour over both colours?

Bang a load of cheapo white on it until it is uniform.
