I was starting to rub down the flaking paint off my drain pipe for re-painting with all weather gutter black paint as it's looking shabby. I found when I was rubbing it down that the pipe seems to be asbestos. I promptly stopped and hoped that I hadn't got any of the stuff up my nose.

Is it safe to gently rub off the paint and carry on painting ? I just want it to look aesthetically pleasing.

With a suitable mask and lightly rubbing the paint and not bare pipe, you should be OK. The a good wash with detergent or a de-greaser

You could take a bucket of water and rub down the with wet and dry paper then wash off .That'll keep the pipe wet and negate dust
