A mate of mine says you do not need to paint over mastic around doors and windows, that it is best not to. I'm guessing there is no point painting it while it is still soft. Anyone know?

If it's real mastic it will stay soft for years & was never meant to be painted over.
If it's some sort of acrylic filler, please yourself.
If it's silicone, don't bother. Paint won't stick to it for very long.

Don't paint mastic especially if it's still soft. It wont generally stick to silicone sealants. You can paint on builders/ decorators caulk if you need an internal filler.

Acrylic mastic is used when it needs to be painted. It will skin over after a couple of days

Silicone or polysulphide wont take paint
