Painting over Shiny wall paint

Hi

Have some purple walls in the new house. The paint is very shiny. I was wondering if it could be gloss but it doesn't come off in the same way the door frames strip.

Would I have to sand the shine away before a fresh coat?

it is most likely ‘silk’ emulsion- horrible stuff. I have no idea why people use it.

No need to sand - but the new emulsion may sort of slide around on it a little so two coats will likely be required.

Use Matt finish emulsion on walls - much more forgiving and softer on the eye.

Personally, I WOULD sand all over - that will ensure a good key for the new paint.

Why take the chance?

You don't want the new stuff to peel off easily.

I'm not sure I would describe silk emulsion as "shiny."

It might be some kind of gloss.

Matt holds dirt and is harder to clean.

Sand it down either with a sander, a pole and sanding plate or by hand.
Then dust it all off, wipe all with a slightly damp cloth and then paint.
