Painting Picket Fence

Need to paint picket fencing black - trouble is the timber is rough sawn so cannot be coated effectively in gloss paint.

Cannot cosider sanding as it's just not practical and chunks missing in the wood in places.

Suggestions please.

Use a black exterior stain/preservative.

Or engine oil and creosote, that comes out black

Thanks for quick response, I had hoped someone would say there was a black stain/preserve but saw nothing on B&Q's website.
Will try local trade paint shop in the week.
