Painting Plywood Panelling!!!

hi everyone!

some of my walls have been covered in very stylish (!) plywood panelling, which hasn't been painted but looks like it has been varnished or something like that in some places..

don't really wanna take it off (and find out the reason why it was put on in the first place!) so I was wondering if anyone could advise me what would be the best paint to use on it? and is any preparation needed (i hope not!)?

How do you mean 'varnished in some places'?...do you mean someone has varnished a few strips and left others or what?
