I am having a new kitchen fitted and just wanted some1 to confirm a answer above.

I had a new CU Unit fitted when i bought the house 4 years ago 1 with the breaker switches, the electrician that came around wouldn't do any hard wiring he called it for the electic to the extractor fan and the cooker, the cooker btw is a gas cooker so the electric is only for the clock.
I was then told that he couldnt do any (hard wiring) because of the part p regulations that the wiring needed to be on its own circuit and that the CU couldn't support this so i needed a bigger CU with breaker switches, i think i already have the right CU unit
simular to this 1 http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/HGVC204.html

my house is in very good condition the electric in the property are all looked after by british gas and i have had a new rewire when i bought the house cos it needed so much work doing to it that i got that done at the same time.

Please help this is driving me mad.

New work in kitchens is a notifiable job under part P.

Is that the answer you wanted, if not please elaborate a bit more.

NB British gas are not very good (well in my area) with electrics and sub out most of the work without decent QC- when you say you use them, do you mean you have some sort of service contract regarding your electrics with them?

Agree, need more info. What circuits do you have at the moment? The 2 items you mention don't really strike me as needing to be on their own circuits, however extending the existing circuits in a kitchen is notifiable to your LABC under part p.

You're not kidding!

As part of our boiler and appliances cover we got a free fixed wiring inspection from BG.

They told me my installation is all absoloutly fine. It has a couple of circuits still wired in rubber, no MEBs, and plenty of other faults which would have been apparent with out much inspection at all. :?

Lower your head in shame  (mine still has rewireable fuses!)

Rob: What did the paperwork look like? Can you post it?

I have news for you - he wasn't an electrician. So you should forget him, ignore anything he said, and start again with real electricians who know what they are talking about.

You went to all the trouble and expense of a rewire, and only had a tiny CU fitted?

Ahh the dreaded Grittish Bass.

You sir have a MULTIMETER, I have a MULTIFUNCTION TESTER, pull up an chair and listen carefully.

Which instrument can be used to give a fair idea (in conjuction with a visual inspection) of the state of an electrical installation?

Not your sodding multimeter thats for sure.
