Currently doing a refurb and trying to soundproof (well, not completely) the necessary party walls where I can. In the dining room I can only afford to lose 25mm max on the party wall due to the configuration of the stairs. Is it worthwhile dot and dabbing some 12.5mm acoustic board or will it be a complete waste of time?

My favourite site for soundproofing: http://www.soundstop.co.uk/soundproofing_walls.php

Their thinnest suggestions are about 50mm.

I suspect a layer of acoustic plasterboard will not make much difference. But it might depend on what sort of noise you're concerned about, and what the construction of the current wall is.

I used it at our house but I've not tested it yet.

It's definitely a lot more dense than the normal stuff and doesn't cost much more. It looks to have glass fibres inside it.

Lining a room is great for stopping sound getting out, but crap for stopping sound getting in.

It depends on your expectations.
