Hi Please could anyone suggest the maximum permitted thickening of a party wall at roof level?

For example currently a 6" clinker block party wall has been thickened to support a 3.5 meter high brick & block wall above the roof line. around 9" in width.

Any links to references & recommendations most welcome.

Thank you.

There is no maximum, and 9" would not be an issue.

In structural terms, it is not the thickening of the wall, but the bracing of the extended wall that matters

Thanks for the reply - I'm surprised that a fair percentage of the masonary above roof level is not supported down to ground level?

One final question if I may...
It the party wall is 6" clinker block, which may exibit unpredictable structural characteristics. Would a 3" insertion of steel work be sufficient to meet minimum building requirements. I.e. not beyond 1/2 of the party wall width?

Thanks again,
srm.

It all depends on the specific loads, loading conditions and some other factors

Its certainly possible, but without someone looking at the specifics and doing some calculations, then its not possible to say
