patchy brown and straw coloured lawn

any ideas? i have no pets , so i do not understand why the grass is so poor. Is there any products to help turn the grass green etc. i dont want to turf so i would be greatful for any advice.

Evergreen is supposed to be good, get it from most diy places.....

What is there under the lawn (e.g. builders rubble, concrete, spilled diesel)

Could be chafer grubs or leather jackets

or could be lack of water and the temperature, in which case it will come back
